Shooting Rajnikanth

January 2011

This installation was made at Dakshina Chitra, Chennai, as part of the seminar on street art at which I was making a presentation on Chinese toys on Indian streets. For this installation a Chinese toy was hacked and combined with a Tamil film hoarding. Hand-painted cutout hoardings of giant sizes are popularly used for film publicity in Tamil cinema. This hoarding made of vinyl stickers pasted on wood is a representation of the superstar of Tamil cinema Rajinikanth - as portrayed in his recent sci-fi blockbuster Robot. The laser gun was used to activate and audio chip connected to the target. The audio triggered in this fashion was recorded in a voice impersonating Rajinikanth. Itmocks the shooter for trying to shoot at him.
